What is Food Strategy Coaching?
Have you been wanting to make changes to the way you eat but you haven’t been sure HOW to go about doing it? Have you been struggling with digestive issues, fatigue, or a feeling of being overwhelmed? If so, then food strategy coaching can be a transformative experience for you.
Food Strategy Coaching is a style of health coaching that involves working one-on-one with clients to assess their diets, observe patterns about how different foods affect their daily lives, establish manageable eating and lifestyle goals, and develop a sustainable plan with ongoing support. This is a holistic approach to improving overall health and wellness, designed by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition®, that celebrates incremental changes and successes.
Your Food Strategy Coach will work with you during bi-weekly sessions (every other week) based on your Bio-Individuality, which is the idea that each of us has unique food and lifestyle needs. One person’s food is another person’s poison, and that’s why diets that have worked for others might not work for you. Using the principle of Bio-Individuality, your coach supports you to make positive changes that are based on your unique body.
What is Food Strategy Coaching good for?
Working with a Food Strategy Coach is a revitalizing, individualized process that will help you become more aware of the effects that different types of food have on your body. This process is especially helpful for anyone planning to do an elimination diet. Your coach guides you to experience the following benefits and more:
- Have less room and desire for unhealthy foods, or foods to which you may be intolerant. This happens as your coach helps you steadily increase delicious and healthful food that is right for your Bio-Individuality–a method called “crowding out.”
- Learn to recognize, deconstruct, and eliminate cravings that are controlling you. Cravings play a critical role in understanding what your body needs and shouldn’t be ignored. Your coach will help you deconstruct your cravings and understand what they’re really telling you in order to reclaim a sense of control in the way you eat.
- Begin to truly focus on self-care. It’s easy to overlook all of the things that contribute to our sense of nourishment and fulfillment. It’s not just the food we eat that affects our health, but all of the other factors present in our daily lives. Healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, regular physical activity, and a spiritual awareness are essential forms of nourishment–essential foundations of health we call “primary foods.” When these primary foods are balanced, what you eat becomes secondary and more simple to manage. Your coach will guide you in learning how to find that balance.
- Feel better in your body!
What can I expect from a session/series of sessions?
Your first session is FREE and will include taking a health history and discussing/co-creating your short-term and long-term health goals. We will also spend some time going over the concepts inherent in this style of health coaching so you will know what to expect over the course of our work together.
Subsequent sessions generally take place over the course of a six-month program during bi-weekly meetings. At each meeting, your coach will guide you to maintain manageable, actionable steps and accomplish your health goals within reasonable time frames. You will also receive email support between sessions and additional resources (such as meal ideas, assistance with meal/snack planning, recipes, and informational handouts) throughout our time together.
*You may also choose to schedule additional off-site services with your Food Strategy Coach, such as pantry clean-outs or supermarket tours. Contact Elyse Langer-Smith for more information.*
