What is The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education?
The Feldenkrais Method is an approach to improving your life that uses gentle, mindful movement to bring new awareness and possibility into every aspect of being. The method employs neurology, early childhood development, kinesiology, and induction techniques in order to communicate with the human nervous system through the language of movement. There exists both a 1:1 hands-on approach called Functional Integration, as well as a group format called Awareness Through Movement. Either can be done alone, but the most potent transformation is possible when the two are done in tandem with one another.
The Feldenkrais Method can be helpful with:
- Reducing aches and pains
- Reducing chronic pain
- Mitigating anxiety and depression
- Improving sleep
- Improving attention and concentration
- Improving posture, movement, coordination, and balance
- Expanding breathing
- Expanding creativity
- Embodying emotions
- Unlearning habits
- Improving intuition
- Improving self-confidence
What can I expect from a treatment/ a series of treatments? What do I need to do to prepare for it?
A session typically involves an initial assessment, followed by guided hands-on movement that relaxes and communicates with the client’s nervous system. Habits of tension and disorganization are identified, illuminated, and released so that new patterns of movement can be gently introduced. The movements are performed without increasing pain or difficulty in any way. Sessions may be performed in some combination of back-lying, side-lying, front-lying, sitting, or standing with or without a table and can accommodate any limitations or needs. Often, supports are used to create more comfort in resting.
Over the course of several sessions you will begin to feel yourself moving with greater ease through your daily life. It is common to notice less pain and discomfort as well as shifting around patterns of emotion and thought. You will begin to identify patterns of movement and posture that cause you difficulty and find alternative possibilities through an curiosity rather than correction. If you practice any kind of exercise or mindful movement, you will begin to notice improvement in your ability and self-awareness.
Sessions are fully clothed, but clothing comfortable for movement should be worn.
