Help Your Family Shine with Hypnotherapy

By Talia Miller of Skylight Hypnotherapy

As parents and caregivers, we want our children to be happy, but what we really need is for our children to be resilient

I was recently leading a hypnotherapy session with a 10-year-old client who was suffering from anxiety. He wasn’t sleeping well and he’d been withdrawing from his friends. After chatting with him for a while about his interests, I said, “I know why your mom wanted us to work together, but I wondered what you’re hoping to change today.” He paused and then quietly responded, “maybe I could learn to forgive myself better.”

I showed this young client some of the hypnosis tools he could use to focus his conscious mind so that he could tap into the power of the unconscious parts of his brain. Then I guided him through a process that allowed him to spend time looking into his imagination, exploring new possibilities. There was a moment when his face lit up and he seemed to undergo a transformation, sitting up straighter and responding with more enthusiasm.

This transformation is the moment in a hypnotherapy session when something almost magical begins to happen. This particular client was fascinated with a game I taught him that asked him to pay attention in a new and extremely focused way. He imagined his hand was glued to the table and focused on it so hard that it actually became difficult for him to move his hand until I told him that he could let it all go. This exercise served as a fun way to begin, and it also gave his conscious mind an important job to do.

Hypnotherapy helps us respond to challenges by accessing the unconscious mind where our habits reside—and changing them. I set the stage by helping you to focus your conscious mind so you can access the parts of your unconscious brain. Habits you’ve been struggling with can be replaced with answers your conscious mind didn’t think were possible. As you rewire your brain, you find the path to resilience.

Hypnotherapy can seem surprisingly simple and can work rapidly, even when other modalities haven’t made much difference. Hypnotherapy helped this 10-year-old stop worrying about the mistakes he’d made. It became clear to him that the only thing getting in his way was the anxiety he’d been feeling, and he was able to quickly find exactly the answer he needed to take action. He made  a concrete plan about how to reconnect in-person with friends he hadn’t seen in a while.

Before he left, he was literally dancing around the room with joy when he showed his mom some of the tools he’d learned. Later, his mom told me he slept better after our session than he had in a long time. She reported that days later, his mood continued to be lighter. She admitted that she slept better, too, knowing his mental health had improved.

With hypnotherapy, I teach your children the tools that they need to grow into confident, resilient young people. Addressing these issues can often take just three to five sessions. This time of year can feel overwhelming for many families, which makes it the perfect time to book a session.
